Three monthiversary

Emily started smiling in earnest this past month.  It's very gratifying to see her face split into a wide grin as soon as you come into view.  She just loves to have conversations and really responds to the Itsy Bitsy Spider.  Her head control is coming along, and just today she was trying desperately to throw herself onto her back from her tummy (she was only bottom-half successful).  Emily came along a month early but she's hitting all her milestones like a champ.  Savouring every baby moment with this one!

It's Underwear Time

We potty trained Caitlin over the long weekend.  We put underwear on her on Saturday afternoon and haven't had any accidents since - we just keep reminding her to let us know when she has to go potty.  Before this she had already been sitting on the potty regularly, so the only new thing was to sit on it EVERY time.  After a couple accident-free days we ventured out to a play date, then a park... and that was that.  I think we were more afraid of starting the process than she was.  She's still wearing pull-ups at night because we don't want to deal with two kids waking up in the middle of the night, so once Emily starts sleeping through the night we'll go back to it.  But it's a good start!

This is what happens when toddlers choose their own outfits.  Yes, we did let her go to daycare like this.

Princess bed

Caitlin slept all night in her princess bed for the first time last week.  Unfortunately, the next night she was back in her crib.  Fingers crossed she'll be done with her crib before Emily needs it...

Two monthiversary

Emily is still a very sleepy baby.  Her favourite things to do are eat, sleep, and cry because she's not asleep yet.  She does have a few alert periods during the day where she's happy to play on her play mat or sit in her bouncy chair, and generally just chill out.

She's definitely a deeper sleeper than Caitlin was and easier to put to sleep too.  Caitlin used to cry for hours and get super overtired, but Emily fusses for 20 minutes at most before giving in.  Hopefully it stays this way as she gets older.

This week we got our first cute baby coo.  So adorable.

Cottage weekend

We went up for a day to the Larus cottage over the long weekend.  It was chilly so there was no swimming, but Caitlin got to try lots of new things, including:

fishing...

speed boating...

...and driving a dock.

Don't worry, dad got to relax too.

Two and a half

Caitlin is two and a half years old.  And she's a person.  She can speak in full sentences, ask questions, and express opinions loudly.  She can count to ten in English, French, and Cantonese

Her favourite phrase right now is: "I'm going to do it all myself!" - including pushing her own stroller as pictured.  She was pretty terrible at navigating the first few times but now she can mainly go straight.  I'm sure this skill will come in handy later on in life?

When Caitlin was born I was determined she wouldn't watch TV for a good long time.  Well, that time has come and gone and her favourite show is Dora.  When we play games together it's inevitably some sort of Dora adventure, always involving Swiper.  That sneaky fox!

Potty training is coming along slowly but surely.  She's had a couple dry days and naps, but we're still working on consistency.

Caitlin has been handling her new role as a big sister like a champ.  She loves to comfort Emily and sings her 'Rock-a-Bye Emily' when she cries.  It's too cute.

Zucchini Chips

We received a ton of zucchini from our CSA this week.  The only thing to do was to make zucchini chips! We used this recipe from the Food Network, and panko instead of breadcrumbs.

They were kind of delicious.

One and a bit monthiversary

Baby Emily is six-or-seven-weeks old already!  Time flies with the second child.  She's been an easy baby so far - or maybe it just seems that way since we're old pros at this whole baby thing.  yeeah.

She was born four weeks early on June 24 and weighed 6 lbs 10 oz.  She was 6 lbs 3 oz. when she left the following day.  At her one month appointment, she was a whopping 8 lbs 11 oz. - this baby's been real busy growing!  Caitlin was 8 lbs 13 oz at one month, so she's caught up to her big sister already.  She currently spends most of her days eating and napping, and wakes up once in the middle of the night to eat.  It's hard to tell how she's doing on developmental milestones but I do wonder if she'll be behind since she was a preemie.

It's not clear from the picture, but she has the most extraordinary light gray eyes.  They'll probably turn brown later on, considering her genetics (I have brown and Dave has hazel), but it would be so cool if they stayed that way.

Pink Sunglasses

Caitlin found these pink sunglasses last week and said, "Mummy, these are girl sunglasses!"  Apparently gender biases are already firmly ingrained at almost-two-and-a-half years old.

And yes, I had to look up ingrained vs engrained.

CSA Week 2 and a Salad Dressing Recipe

We joined a CSA for the first time this year.  This is our second weekly box of vegetables:

  • spinach
  • radishes
  • dill
  • lebanese cucumbers (3)
  • field cucumber
  • tomatoes (3)
  • yellow pepper
  • orange pepper
  • asparagus (2 bunches)
  • green onions
  • bag of spring mix
  • strawberry jam

The first week I was worried we wouldn't get through all the vegetables so we went through them pretty aggressively... and ended up running out around day 5.  So the good news is receiving the box has accomplished what I was hoping it would: that we would eat more vegetables just by having them.  I was worried it would be like having a gym membership, where you end up paying lots of money but it doesn't actually motivate you to go to the gym (yeah, about that...).

Going through all the vegetables efficiently does take some planning though.  I'm hoping it won't all fall apart when I have a newborn in the house.

Financially it is probably more money than we would normally spend on produce.  Some of it goes towards the good feeling of supporting a local farm.  Some of it goes towards actually eating healthier.  But I'm hoping most of the real value will come out of our eating out budget since we will be cooking more meals.  Full report at the end of the year!

So we started last night with a big ol' salad (spring mix, dill, tomato, yellow pepper, lebanese cucumber).  Here's a great dressing recipe from allrecipes.com - we like to use about half the sugar recommended because well, that's a lot of sugar.

Spring Mix Salad Dressing

INGREDIENTS

2 tablespoons sesame seeds
1 tablespoon poppy seeds
1/2 cup white sugar
1/2 cup olive oil
1/4 cup distilled white vinegar
1/4 teaspoon paprika
1/4 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
1 tablespoon minced onion

DIRECTIONS

In a medium bowl, whisk together the sesame seeds, poppy seeds, sugar, olive oil, vinegar, paprika, Worcestershire sauce and onion. Cover, and chill for one hour.
